The 2012 viticultural year started with a very cold and dry winter. Sprouting took place in the third week of March but the spring remained fresh with a high rain- fall in April and May, which caused a de- lay in the growth of the vines, seeing alow vegetative vigor and a delay in flow- ering and shading. The weather warmed in June and July which promoted a good vegetative growth however the berries and bunches were always smaller than normal. Also the “veraison” happened a little later. The maturation occurred as usual and the harvest began on Septem- ber 20th with very good fruit quality.
The grapes for the Pacheca Vintage Port were taken into the winery in small chests of 25 kg where they were stalked and crushed and then sent to granite stone tanks where they were trodden by men. The wine was kept in old Portu- guese oak barrels for about a year until January 2014. The wine was approved as being of excellent quality so could then have the Vintage designation. Bot- tling happened in early June 2014.
Pacheca Vintage Port 2012 is a deep red ruby color wine. Shows great intensity of black and red fruit in the nose, with ele- gant and complex aromas of berries. In the mouth it is fresh with the intense blackfruit flavor, a lot of structure and volumeand with blueberry, blackberry and rasp-berry flavors ends in a succulent and per- sistent mouth ending,
Should be drunk refreshed at the end of the meal with soft cheeses, chocolate desserts or sweet eggs.
