The list of white grape varieties that are authorized for the production of Port wines and DOC Douro white wines is enormous. Here, both in Quinta da Pacheca, Vale de Abraão and S. José do Barrilário, we have some of these varieties planted at different altitudes. Some exemples are Moscatel Galego Branco, Malvasia-Fina, Viosinho, Códega, Gouveio, Rabigato, ....
With the grapes from Pacheca, which is at an altitude of 70 meters, we usually make Port wines. With the grapes that come from higher elevations such as the Quinta de S. José do Barrilário, which is around 200, 250 meters high, we make DOC Douro wines, taking advantage of the natural acidity that the grapes have.
Examples of wines that result from these varieties are the Colheita Branco, the Superior Branco, the Reserva Branco, among others. The Pacheca Grande Reserva White is an example of a typical Douro white wine, made from Viosinho, Rabigato and Arinto. It is a wine that still ferments in 500L French oak barrels, new and used, and then is for a year under the lees, a weekly bâtonnage work in order to have a very persistent mouth, very fat, with a capacity for aging and aging in bottle for a long time, thus being a wine that you can buy and taste now or if you prefer to keep some bottles in your cellar and go tasting over the years.
