About Douro

A Historic Winemaking Region

As the world’s first officially demarcated and regulated wine region, officially established in 1756, the Douro is the birthplace of exceptional wines and a land of rich cultural identity, rooted in tradition and the rhythms of the land.

With a climate defined by hot, dry summers and cold winters, the Douro invites visitors throughout the year. Each season paints the landscape in new colours, offering distinct sensory experiences — from the lush green vines of spring to the enchantment of the harvest season in autumn.

Douro cuisine is one of the region’s greatest treasures: authentic, generous, and full of intense flavours. Dishes like roasted goat, “posta à mirandesa” (special grilled beef), smoked meat rice, or traditional sweets express the local soul — always best enjoyed with the wines of the region.

Traditions remain alive in popular festivities, pilgrimages, warm hospitality, and stories passed down through generations.

Douro is built on hard work, but also on long meals shared at the table, celebrations with accordion music, and a deep pride in its roots.
