Grape Expectations Ep. 07 - Quinta da Pacheca and Foot Treading

Quinta da Pacheca and Foot Treading
Quinta da Pacheca has a lagares room that was inaugurated in 1908 and is our vinification center for Port and red wines.
After crushing in a traditional crusher, the grapes are taken to our lagares for foot treading for three hours on the first day.
And why do we still do it this way after all?
Because this way we are able to extract with the greatest delicacy everything that exists in the skin to have the highest quality wines, such as color, tannins, aromas, and we are also able to prevent the wines from being over extracted.
In this way, the wines are left with their best qualities. An example of a wine that is made in our lagares and trodden by foot is Pacheca Lagar N.º1. It is a blended wine made from two grape varieties, Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional. The two varieties are vinified together in the granite press and the result is fantastic! We obtained a wine with a deep ruby color, very fruity aroma, with evident notes of ripe black fruit, such as plums and blackberries, accompanied by notes of chocolate coming from the barrel. It is great to accompany our traditional dish of Octopus à Lagareiro.
We hope you try it and like it!
